A data map is an overview grouping of the data processed by the business in order to create structure.
Use
The data map is used to navigate to underlying data descriptions. It is also used to create an overview of which data domains and data groups exist in a business.
Way of working
- Lay out the data domains as a background.
- Place the data groups within the respective data domain and draw the relationships if these are already missing.
The layout of the map follows the same principles as the division of the process map, which means that management data is placed at the top, supporting data at the bottom and data that supports the core business in between.
A prerequisite is that data domains and data groups have already been identified. This is a very extensive work which is dealt with separately.
