An idea which build a basis for how something should be done, managed or grouped.

Description

A principle is an abstract and overarching statement about how something should be or done, expressing a fundamental stance, value, or guideline. Principles serve as guiding direction in decision-making and design within business development and architecture – whether it concerns organization, processes, information, applications, or technology.

Unlike more specific requirements, a principle applies broadly across multiple systems or contexts. It describes what is desirable, not necessarily how it should be achieved. A principle can form the basis for many concrete requirements and design decisions.

Example

  • Maximize the benefit for the entire business
All decisions should be based on what benefits the business as a whole – not just individual units.

  • Information is everyone's responsibility
All parts of the organization are responsible for creating, using, and protecting information.

  • Business continuity
System failures or external disruptions must not lead to business stoppages.

  • Data is an asset
Data should be seen as a valuable and strategic resource, not as a technical appendage.

  • Data is shared wherever possible
Information should be stored once and used by everyone who needs it – not duplicated.
