The capability map is even called as business model and is one of the most powerful tools in transition tasks. In the capability map, different problems and opportunities could be mapped depending on which perspective it is analyzed from, for instance operational effectivity.

CAPABILITY AREAS

  • A cluster of business capabilities in order to create structure and overview. The division is simple, logical and practical.
  • The business capabilities which are included in the value-creation flow for customer is called external, and the business capabilities which supports those external ones are called internal capabilities.
  • A capability area is limited so that a clear delivery can be differentiated.

BUSINESS CAPABILITIES

  • A holistic description of the business capability to produce services and products in accordance with vision and goal.
  • An integrated and extensive series of related knowledge, competencies and capabilities related to a specific series of resources (including persons and organizations) which - when combined - make it possible for the company to do something effectively.
  • Business capabilities integrate seamlessly with each other through agreed expenses- and service levels.

RESPONSIBILITY LEVEL

A simple cluster for differentiating:

  • Strategic decisions and plans
  • Tactical governance and monitoring
  • Execution of practical work

THE 40-MAP

  • The number 40 is an approximate number based on a reasonable leveling between simplicity and explanatory value.
  • Studies of different branches show that 40 business capabilities work properly in strategic planning process for creating an understanding about different aspects and important relations.

Purpose

The capability map is used for navigating underlying capability descriptions. It is also used as a basis for illustrating how different capabilities integrate as well as gaining different perspectives such as Core/Non-Core and Maturity.

Way of Working

  1. Put capability areas as background.
  2. Place business capabilities in respective capability area divided based on responsibility level (strategic, tactical, operational)

(A prerequisite is that the business capabilities are identified beforehand. It is a very extensive work which could not be completely described in this little description box.)
