Work packages that represent the set of work steps required to achieve a comprehensive deliverable within the specified framework for time and resources.

Description

The time limit is usually set to a 2-3 month calendar time and the resources are limited to what selected teams can achieve together.

In the same way that processes (N3) contain process steps (N4), releases contain the work steps required to achieve the requested result - one or more capabilities - arranged in logical groups. Unlike a recurring process, the work package is completely unique.

A release can be implemented independently and is usually a subset of a stage.

In agile development frameworks such as SAFe, the release for Program Increment is referred to as "a time box where an Agile Release Team (ART) delivers value in the form of functional and tested software and systems. PIs are usually eight to twelve weeks long."
